Kilimanjaro Climb Tour Overview
The 7 Days Machame Route is one of the most scenic, gradual, and successful routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is designed with an extra acclimatization day, giving climbers more time to adapt to the altitude and drastically increasing summit success levels. This route is also known as the “Whiskey Route”, famous for its stunning variety of landscapes—lush rainforest, moorland fields, volcanic ridges, sweeping valleys, alpine deserts, and glacier views.
Over seven days, trekkers enjoy a well-balanced pace, allowing for better rest, reduced fatigue, and a more enjoyable climb. The additional acclimatization day at Karanga Camp or Shira Plateau provides the perfect “climb high, sleep low” profile, making this route ideal for those seeking a safer and more comfortable ascent.
The 7-day Machame option is perfect for adventurous climbers who want a richer mountain experience with improved acclimatization, more scenic stops, and a higher likelihood of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa.

Day by Day Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Moshi – Machame Gate (1,640m) – Machame Camp (2,835m)
The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to Machame Gate for registration. After formalities, you enter the rich rainforest zone, trekking under a canopy of towering trees, unique plants, and lively bird species. The trail is humid and slightly muddy but gentle enough for a good warm-up as you make your way to Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Zone: Rainforest
Day 2: Machame Camp (2,835m) – Shira Camp (3,750m)
Today you climb steadily out of the forest and enter the heather and moorland zone, passing giant heathers and volcanic formations. As you approach the Shira Plateau, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the beautiful surrounding plains. You arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon for rest, hot meals, and acclimatization.
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Zone: Heather / Moorland
Day 3: Shira Camp (3,750m) – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
This is one of the most important acclimatization days. The route rises gradually toward the Lava Tower, where you reach 4,630m—your highest point so far. After lunch, you descend into the breathtaking Barranco Valley, known for its giant groundsels and dramatic views of the southern glaciers. Sleeping lower than your high point significantly boosts acclimatization.
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Zone: Alpine Desert
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Your morning begins with climbing the renowned Barranco Wall—a challenging but exciting section requiring scrambling in some areas. Once at the top, enjoy stunning views of the glacier fields. The path continues through gentle, undulating terrain, eventually descending into the Karanga Valley, then rising again to Karanga Camp. This day is intentionally shorter to enhance acclimatization.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Zone: Alpine Desert
Day 5: Acclimatization Day at Karanga Camp
Today is a valuable and relaxed acclimatization day, unique to the 7-day version. You will take short acclimatization hikes around Karanga, practicing the “walk high, sleep low” technique. This extra day allows your body to adjust, improving the safety and comfort of your climb and increasing your chances of summiting successfully.
During the afternoon, you return to camp for hot meals and rest, preparing mentally and physically for the final ascent stages.
Zone: Alpine Desert
Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) – Barafu Camp (4,640m) + Midnight Summit Push
After breakfast, you continue upward along a rocky, exposed route that leads to Barafu Camp, perched on a ridge overlooking the southeastern glaciers. Upon arrival, you have an early dinner, organize summit gear, and rest.
At midnight, the summit attempt begins. Guided by headlamps, you climb slowly through rocky terrain and switchbacks toward the ridge leading to Stella Point (5,756m). With determination and pacing, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Total Hiking Time: 8–12 hours (to summit + descent to Barafu)
Zone: Arctic Zone
Day 7: Summit – Barafu Camp – Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate
After celebrating at Uhuru Peak, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The descent takes you through the alpine desert, moorlands, and eventually back into the rainforest.
On the final morning, you walk down to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificates and meet your driver for transfer to Moshi.
End Point: Mweka Gate
Zone: Arctic → Rainforest
